Ceramic Crown Placement for a Back Tooth

A damaged back tooth was restored with a ceramic crown. Before treatment, the dentist assessed the tooth and roots, carried out professional cleaning, and prepared the foundation for the restoration.

Why the Patient Sought Treatment

The patient came to the clinic with a substantially damaged back tooth. The remaining walls needed protection, so a ceramic crown was selected to restore its shape and chewing surface.

Assessment and Preparation

The dentist examined the tooth and gums and checked the pulp’s response to a cold test. A periapical X-ray was used to assess the roots, root canals, and tissues around the root tips. The assessment found no indication for root canal treatment.

Before preparing the tooth, professional cleaning was performed to remove plaque and tartar and clean between the teeth.

Treatment Stages

1. Preparing the tooth.
Under local anaesthesia, weakened tissue was removed, the core was rebuilt, and the tooth was shaped to accommodate the crown.

2. Making the custom crown.
Impressions were taken, the ceramic shade was selected, and a temporary crown was fitted. The laboratory made the permanent crown to suit the neighbouring teeth and the patient’s bite.

3. Fitting and bonding the crown.
The dentist checked the fit, colour, and contacts with adjacent teeth. A rubber dam isolated the tooth from saliva, and the ceramic crown was bonded in place.

4. Checking the bite.
Excess bonding material was removed, bite contacts were checked, and any adjusted areas were polished.

Treatment Result

The tooth’s shape and chewing surface were restored. The ceramic crown blends naturally with the neighbouring teeth in colour and form.

The patient received guidance on home care and routine check-ups to monitor the tooth and crown.
